How to Choose an Activewear Manufacturer in China (2026 Checklist)
By OMI Apparel — full-package activewear manufacturer, Quanzhou, China
Finding the right activewear manufacturer in China can be the difference between a best-selling collection and a season of returns. As a factory that has served 1,000+ brands across Europe and North America for over 10 years, we’ve put together the exact checklist our clients use when auditing suppliers — including the questions most buyers forget to ask.
1. Confirm They Are a Factory, Not Just a Trading Company
Many “manufacturers” you find online are middlemen. That doesn’t always mean bad service, but it usually means 10–15% higher costs and slower communication.
How to verify:
- Ask for a business license and check the business scope includes manufacturing.
- Request a live video factory tour or visit in person.
- Ask which processes are in-house (cut & sew, printing, embroidery) and which are outsourced.
A full-package manufacturer like OMI handles fabric sourcing, tech packs, sampling, bulk production, QC and shipping in one place — no middlemen, full cost control.
2. Check MOQ and Lead Times Before Falling in Love
Classic trap: you design a beautiful capsule collection, then discover the MOQ is 3,000 pcs per color.
Benchmarks for 2026:
- Stock fabrics: from 200 pcs per style per color
- Custom-developed fabrics: 800–2,000 meters per fabric type
- Sampling: 10–15 days (non-embroidered), 15–35 days (with embroidery/prints)
- Bulk production: 45 days standard, 60 days with decoration
If a supplier quotes suspiciously low lead times, ask how many rounds of sampling are included. Two rounds is the industry norm for from-scratch production.
3. Audit Communication Quality Early
Your factory contact will become your most important partner. Test them before committing:
- Do they reply within 24 hours on working days?
- Is their English clear enough for technical discussions (grades, GSM, flatlock, gusset)?
- Do they ask proactive questions about your tech pack instead of just saying “OK”?
Communication problems at the sampling stage multiply at bulk production.
4. Ask About EU/US Size Grading Experience
A size M for a US brand is not the same as a size M for a German brand. Ask the factory:
- Which size charts do they work with (US / EU / UK)?
- Can they grade from your base size or develop a new size set?
- Do they keep fit samples from previous clients in similar categories?
Factories that regularly ship to your target market already know the fit expectations — this alone can save you an extra sampling round.
5. Verify Quality Control Process
Ask for their QC workflow in writing:
- Inline inspection during sewing (catches problems before 10,000 pcs are made)
- Final random inspection against AQL standards
- Individual packing and sealing before cartons leave the floor
If a factory can’t describe its QC process in two minutes, keep looking.
6. Understand Total Landed Cost, Not Unit Price
A quote that looks 8% cheaper can lose money after:
- Sampling fees (are they credited back to bulk orders?)
- Shipping terms (FOB vs DDP)
- Payment terms (30% deposit / 70% before shipment is standard)
- Defect allowance and after-sales handling
Always compare quotes on the same Incoterms, and ask for a cost breakdown: fabric, trims, labor, overhead, profit. Transparent factories will share it.
7. Start With a Trial Order
Even after passing every check, start with a small run — 200–500 pcs. Evaluate sample-to-bulk consistency, on-time delivery, and how they handle the inevitable small problem. Then scale the relationship.
Ready to Test Your Shortlist?
Send the same tech pack to 2–3 factories and compare: response speed, technical questions asked, price transparency, and sample quality. The best partner will be obvious within two weeks.
