There is no excuse for these high quality running jackets. Although the sun shines temporarily, this is England after all. So read on for everything you need to know about the best running jackets so you can run on asphalt, rain or shine.
Every Runners World Tested Running Jacket has been rigorously tested by our panel of over 30 runners. Each test rider was asked to remove the jacket for several runs in varying weather conditions, from sunlight and light rain to high winds, heavy rain and night excursions. After every run, they will notice how waterproof and windproof this jacket is. Our team also works at night to test the effectiveness of any high visibility parts.
After trying the jacket on, our testers filled out a questionnaire in which they shared their thoughts on everything from jacket support and fit to lightness and comfort. We asked testers to comment on arm and body length, the strength and smoothness of the zippers, and how easy it is to put the jacket on and off while running.
Does it work well with their bodies? Does it flap in the wind like a frightened chicken? Breathable, airy, trendy, inexpensive and of course weather resistant. All these and many other factors are taken into account in feedback. Finally, the testers were asked if they would wear it again based on its overall quality, performance and value for money.
Inside, our lab team tests each jacket more thoroughly for water resistance using a static press. A rating of five means the water resistance is top-notch, while a lower rating of three or four will protect you from most rain, but a downpour is possible.
The Runner’s World Lab team also washed the jackets according to the washing instructions printed on the label and noted any shrinkage, wrinkling or damage.
In the end, we take all the information from the wear tester and lab ratings, interpret the results, combine the reviews, and give each jacket an overall score. Shown below are the top rated projects marked with our trusted logo.
The rest of the jackets are recommended by Runner’s World editors who also know a thing or two about choosing the right gear for the job after years of testing the latest gear on the market.

Expectations for Lululemon gear are high and they tend to live up to the hype, which is how our testers discovered this beautiful jacket. It’s made from RepelShell™ fabric, designed to keep out the elements on cold, wet runs, and our testers say it does the job well. A soft fleece lining keeps your skin warm and comfortable, while our lab-tested water-repellent fabric keeps them dry in bad weather. Best of all, even when wet, the jacket remains light and comfortable.
In addition to being water resistant, it comes with convenient features including multiple inside and outside pockets (one of which is large enough to hold gloves and a hat), a zip hem, and reflective details to keep you on your run in low light. . The stretchy material and smooth zip make it easy to put on and take off, and the hood stays securely in place when we pick up the pace, although some of our runners found it a bit blocking their vision.
This style is bulky, so we don’t recommend it for speed work or personal bests, and be aware that it’s not a style you can easily pack. However, this is a quality jacket that will last you a long time.
This jacket caught the attention of our testers because it fits neatly into a small shoulder bag. While the water-repellent coating keeps water on the surface and makes our runners feel a little chilly, it keeps everyone dry during light rain. Luckily, there’s plenty of room underneath for multiple layers, which is perfect for spring training.
SHOP NOW – Women’s Jacket Claimed to be windproof and waterproof, this jacket is built for the elements. Reflective fabric also makes running in the dark safe. If you’re avoiding the rain, a handy Velcro strap keeps the hood in place when not in use. However, some people find that 100% nylon fabric swells and doesn’t draw sweat out. Going for a soft 5k race or walking your dog? crack. But if you want to travel long distances, this might not be the best option for you.
Comfortable, easy to move, lightweight, moderately priced – these are all attributes of a reliable running jacket. Our group has feedback that they like the elasticated cuffs that keep fresh air out and the pockets that really help. Our female runners especially like the slim fit, which means no curling or crunchy fabrics. However, it’s best for light rain (no hood) as it’s not as waterproof as some of the other jackets here.
Rain or shine, our judges raved about the OMM Halo Jacket, appreciating details like the hood for a snug fit in wind and rain, and the length that also makes it a winner on the bike.
Loose fit which is great if you want to add some layers inside, although our athletes don’t like it when it speeds up the run. Our male testers found some of the material to be a bit chatty, while our female testers said they became very comfortable in the faster sessions. Although it has no pockets, it earns bonus points for being compact, shrinking to the size of a tennis ball.
Designed for fast runners for whom lightweight materials are key to performance, this jacket scores highly in every aspect. Our testers thought it would be a great option for race day due to the tighter fit. It also washes well; Being able to wash such an expensive item at 40°C with the rest of the set makes a big difference in terms of practicality. For a slim fit, you may need to size up. For night runs, however, some testers found it not as noticeable as they would have liked.
One of the most detailed designs on our list, Saloman Bonatti is available in five chic colors and excels when it comes to style. However, in terms of size, it is on the small side, so you may need to go up in size, especially to move more easily on fast runs. Large pockets also meant that phones and keys traveled a considerable distance as our testers picked up the pace. It got 5/5 for being waterproof and packs up easily for storage or travel.
Avid runners will understand the importance of having a decent all-round piece of gear like the Decathlon Evadict in battling the elements. All of our testers reported that they are perfect for winter running. It scored highly in our waterproof lab tests and kept our athletes warm while running. It also retracts well when you’re ready to take off a layer, but it’s not too tight, allowing you to put on a thick sole if you want. However, some people have said that they need a more breathable fabric, and our petite runners also felt that it was too long at the hip.
Waterproof, comfortable and functional, this jacket is a real find. Testers say the full-length zip makes it quick and easy to put on, and you can also slip it into the compact “duffel pocket” when you want to take off a layer.
Some of our panels get a little hot and sticky when running for long periods of time and the switches are a little annoying as they tend to bounce around. However, it’s perfect for the casual runner who wants to stay dry or those who don’t want to break the bank.
Our team of runners rated it especially well because it keeps you dry, warm and windproof. We hear you ask what more could you want from a great running jacket?
The cord snaps on for a snug fit, and the Velcro straps around the wrists are nice too, and our group appreciated how well they also keep you dry during rainy runs. Inadequacy? For some, the hood seems too big.
Whether it’s mountain hiking, running around the city or trail running, one thing is for sure: comfort is paramount. Comfort is at the heart of the Keela Storm Jacket, where design is as important as function.
With details like a chest pocket, thumb loop, breathable fabric and rolled hood, our runners also appreciate the fit and form-fitting fit. This keeps everyone looking and feeling cool, even during high-intensity workouts.
Made from 100% polyester with a PU membrane and weighing just 100g, breathability and light wear are key here. If you are heading to the start line, our runners will meet you there; thanks to the translucent design, the start number is also visible under it.
However, it’s hard to take off while running and scored 4/5 in our waterproof test, which is worth considering if you’re out in the rain a lot.
The name says it all: choose this jacket if reflectivity is a priority. Its road safety is ranked among the best in its class with the brightest and most visible exterior coating we’ve ever seen. It can also be placed flexibly and conveniently wherever you want.
On the other hand, it lacks breathability (it clings to bare skin, so wear a long-sleeve top under it), and soon the material started to smell like a teenager’s bedroom.
We had a hard time blaming this jacket as it has an amazing combination of lightness and warmth. The water-repellent fabric, the seams and zippers haven’t seen a drop of rain, and feel soft and comfortable on the skin. It kept us warm during workouts and runs, and we really liked the two large hand pockets.
It fits perfectly, provides breathability, doesn’t close to the body and can’t go wrong on the baggy side. It has adjustable switches, but it’s the right size so we don’t need them. The durable zipper slides up and down without snagging, making it easy to put on and take off while running.
The hi-res neon accents make it safe on the road (although we would like more), and we love the long sleeves and neat hood. There is also no annoying rustle or pop when the wind picks up. There was no shrinkage or wrinkling after machine washing, but it took six hours to air dry as it is quite thick. Despite the high price, this jacket is definitely a worthwhile investment.
Stylish wind protection from the high priestess of the stylish Soar chassis. As you’d expect from such a premium brand, the materials here are top-notch and our tester liked the “comfortable” feel, adding that the material “holds its shape well without feeling too baggy.” Reflective seams are also pleasant to the touch.
At just over 100 grams, this lightweight jacket is the lightest we’ve tried and feels light. It’s as soft as a quality treadmill and completely windproof even in strong winds. Seriously: it does well in strong winds, although it can’t compare to heavy rain.
We love this hood, which fits well on its own or over a cap, and found it to have adequate shower protection. It fits neatly into a pocket with a convenient belt to hang around your waist. It is a simple, effective and affordable solution for most UK weather conditions.
This stylish two-layer jacket lets air through the middle to keep you cool. This type of ventilation is welcome and effective on windless temperate days when you just need a little protection, but it can be bad in high winds where the hood flaps from side to side when lowered.
It is waterproof in the shower but gets wet in about 10 minutes of heavy rain. However, we love the sporty fit, ripstop weave and anti-microbial treatment that keeps ingrained odors at bay.
If you’re heading out on an adventure and need to stay dry, The North Face’s Futurelight Jacket is a great choice. Sure, spending close to £300 on a running jacket is a huge expense, but if you can afford it, this jacket is extremely breathable while keeping you dry while you run.
We were impressed with how light they felt during rainy summer runs (there’s no plastic bag feeling here), and we liked the reflective elements that keep us visible on dark days.
It can also be packed, which is convenient for runners. The only downside we found with this jacket was the complete lack of pockets.
